Dear Spiritual Leaders Opposed to HB 444,
It is time to fire it up again. I just emailed this morning to remain vigilant and the test has come within hours.
Sen. Taniguchi Leaning in Favor of Pulling the HB 444 on the Senate Floor, Thursday, April 16.
We have just received word from reliable sources that today in the Caucus of Senate Democrats; Sen. Brian Taniguchi announced that he is receiving a lot pressure from the proponents of HB 444. The pressure has both increased in intensity, vitriol, and amount for him and other Senators to pull HB 444 from the Committee. Sen. Taniguchi stated that he is now inclined to change his position from opposing to pull the bill from the committee to a position of being in favor of pulling the bill with reservations. The Democratic Caucus was non-committal so he will be polling all the senators for their responses. If he gets the support to pull the bill Sen. Taniguchi’s plan is that he would pull the bill on Thursday, April 16.
In the worse case scenario, Sen. Taniguchi will vote for the pulling of the bill “with reservations” (which is essentially a basic “yes”). They had 6 votes from the last vote but with Sen. Taniguchi’s actions, the door may then open for other Senators who had been waffling to join in, e.g. Senators Dwight Takamine, Clarence Nishihara, Kalani English, Jill Tokuda, et al. If this happens, then the motion to pull the bill would pass. If it passes, then the Senate would debate on it and decide by Friday or next week. Then the question would be if they have the necessary votes to pass HB 444.
In the best case scenario, Sen. Taniguchi will poll the Senators and find that there are not sufficient votes to either pull the bill or pass the bill.
What Should You Do? Call, Visit or Email Your Senator and all the Senators Immediately!
1. Please call, email, or visit Sen. Brian Taniguchi (808-586-6460; sentaniguchi@Capitol.hawaii.gov) ASAP and encourage him to stand strong against pulling HB 444. This is especially true if you have built a relationship with Sen. Taniguchi, you might get a read from him as how he is leaning and pray for him!
2. Please call, email, or visit Sen. President, Colleen Hanabusa (808-586-7793; senhanabusa@Capitol.hawaii.gov).
3. Please call, email, or visit the rest of the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee:
a. Sen. Takamine (808-586-7335; sentakamine@Capitol.hawaii.gov)
b. Sen. Nishihara (808-586-6970; sennishihara@Capitol.hawaii.gov)
c. Sen. Bunda (808-586-6090; senbunda@Capitol.hawaii.gov)
4. Please call, email, or visit the other Senators and encourage them to stand strong against pulling HB 444. Start first with the Senators with whom you have built relationships.
5. Be ready to go down to the Legislative Session, 11:30 AM, April 16, Senate Gallery, State Capitol and wear red.
We are in a good place but we need to act immediately. Especially if you or any of your people have built relationships with the Senators, please call or go down to the Senate right away. The proponents of the bill have not relented. They know that the clock is ticking. We need to do the same.
Lastly, I will be gone for a week of meetings and will be back next week Tuesday, April 21. If there are any alerts that need to go out, Ron Yoshida will be contacting you all. His email address is ronyoshida@hotmail.com.
Let us continue to fight the good fight!
Aloha Ke Akua,
Cal Chinen
